Common Cursive Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Most early cursive problems are easier to fix when you slow down and identify the specific part that changes: shape, size, spacing, join, or pressure.

Fix one variable at a time Shape, size, spacing, joins, speed, and pressure are easier to evaluate separately than all at once.

Correction practice without fake “perfect” handwriting

The model words below are kept unchanged. Instead of digitally squeezing or stretching a sample to imitate a mistake, use each card as a self-check against your own writing.

Spacing check

minimum

Write the word twice. Mark any place where letters touch unexpectedly or where one gap is much wider than the others.

Size check

little little

Compare repeated lowercase heights across both attempts. Correct only the size difference on the next line.

Join check

alone alone

Compare the joins in the two copies. If one connection becomes cramped or stretched, slow that pair down separately.

Correction loop

minimum little alone

Circle your clearest word, name the one variable that worked better, then repeat that same target once on a blank line.

Letters change size inside the same word

Use a consistent writing line and compare the height of repeated lowercase letters. Practice one short word several times instead of switching words after every attempt.

Joins are too tight

Leave enough horizontal travel between letters for the connector to remain visible. Practice the two-letter combination by itself before putting it back into a word.

Writing is rushed

Speed should come after shape consistency. If letters become difficult to recognize, reduce speed until the form stays stable across a full line.

Too much pen pressure

Heavy pressure can make the hand tense and turns harder to control. Use enough pressure to make a clear mark, but not so much that the grip or wrist feels rigid.

Decorative capitals take over the word

Keep the capital readable and give the following lowercase letter a clean starting point. Decoration is optional; readability is not.

Mixing different cursive models

Different systems can use different shapes and connections. Choose one model for practice until its forms feel predictable.

Turn the fix into a routine

Practice the one issue you are working on, then review it again in a short word or sentence.
