Key takeaways

  • Your age counts completed years, then completed months, then the leftover days since your last monthly birthday.
  • You can check your age on any date, including a past date or a future one.
  • Chronological age is shown in the years;months style that many school and speech tests use.
  • February 29 birthdays get their own setting, so you choose whether the birthday counts on February 28 or March 1 in common years.
  • Everything runs in your browser, so the dates you enter stay on your device.

How do you use this age calculator?

It takes a few seconds, and the result updates as soon as both dates are filled in.

  1. Enter the date of birth. Pick it from the calendar or type it into the date box.
  2. Choose the “age on” date. It starts on today. Change it to find how old someone was or will be on a certain day, such as a school cutoff date or a wedding.
  3. Read your exact age. The big line shows years, months and days. Below it you will find the chronological age, total months, weeks, days and hours, the weekday you were born, and your next birthday.
  4. Check a future year (optional). Type a year in “How old will you be in a certain year?” to see the age you turn on that year’s birthday.
  5. Copy the result. Click Copy result to paste the full summary into a form, a note or a message.

If you were born on February 29, an extra setting appears so you can choose how your birthday is counted in years without a leap day.

How is your exact age calculated?

The calculator counts time the same way people usually talk about age. First it counts how many full years have passed since your birth date. Then it counts the full months since your last birthday. Whatever is left over is shown as days.

Here is an example. Someone born on January 15, 2000 is 26 years, 9 months and 14 days old on October 29, 2026. Their last birthday was January 15, 2026. Nine monthly anniversaries later takes you to October 15, and October 15 to October 29 is 14 days.

Months are not all the same length, so month-end birthdays need a rule. When a birth day does not exist in a later month, this tool uses the last day of that month. For example, January 31 to February 28 counts as one full month in a year when February has 28 days.

What does each result mean?

Using the same example, born January 15, 2000, with an age on date of October 29, 2026, here is what each line tells you:

ResultWhat it tells youExample
Exact ageCompleted years, months and days26 years, 9 months, 14 days
Chronological ageYears and months, written as years;months26;9
Total monthsAll completed months, plus leftover days321 months and 14 days
Total weeksAll completed weeks, plus leftover days1,397 weeks and 5 days
Total daysEvery day from the birth date up to the age on date9,784 days
Total hoursTotal days times 24, so it is approximateabout 234,816
Born on aThe weekday of the birth dateSaturday
Next birthdayThe date, the age you will turn and how many days are leftFriday, January 15, 2027: turning 27, in 78 days

Total hours assume each day has 24 hours and ignore the time you were born, so treat that number as a fun estimate rather than an exact count.

How do you calculate age by hand?

You can work out an age on paper with simple subtraction. Write the later date on top and the birth date underneath, both as year, month and day.

  1. Subtract the days. If the top day is smaller, borrow the number of days in the month before the top month and add it to the top day. Then take one month away from the top month.
  2. Subtract the months. If the top month is smaller, borrow 12 months and take one year away from the top year.
  3. Subtract the years. What is left is the age in years, months and days.

Try it with a birth date of November 25, 2012 and a later date of March 10, 2026. You cannot take 25 days from 10, so borrow the 28 days of February 2026 to get 38 days, which leaves 13 days. The top month becomes 2. You cannot take 11 months from 2, so borrow 12 months to get 14, which leaves 3 months, and the top year drops to 2025. Finally, 2025 minus 2012 is 13. The age is 13 years, 3 months and 13 days, which matches what the calculator shows.

Hand math works, but it is easy to slip on month lengths and leap years. The calculator is a quick way to double-check your answer.

What if you were born on February 29?

February 29 only appears in leap years. NASA explains that years divisible by 100 skip the leap day unless they are also divisible by 400, which is why 2000 was a leap year but 2100 will not be.

People born on leap day still age like everyone else. NIST notes that leap-day babies most likely celebrate the day before or the day after in other years. This calculator lets you pick either option:

  • February 28: your new year of age starts on the last day of February.
  • March 1: your new year of age starts on the day after February ends.

In leap years, both settings use February 29. If you need an age for a legal or official form, check which rule that office uses, because the answer can depend on where you live.

What is chronological age, and why do teachers use it?

Chronological age is simply the time since birth. On many school, reading and speech-language assessments it is written as years and months, such as 8;4 for 8 years and 4 months. The calculator shows it in that years;months style next to the exact days.

Test manuals do not all handle the leftover days the same way. Some round to the nearest month and others drop the days. Always follow the scoring rules in the manual for the test you are giving.

Teachers and parents also use exact age to plan practice. If you are matching activities to a child’s level, our cursive worksheets include editable presets you can adjust for younger and older learners.

How old will you be in a certain year?

For a quick answer, subtract your birth year from the year you are curious about. That number is the age you turn on your birthday that year. Before your birthday, you are one year younger.

For example, someone born in 2010 turns 20 on their birthday in 2030 and is 19 earlier that year. The “How old will you be in a certain year?” box in the tool does this for you and shows the exact birthday date and weekday.

Fun ways to use your age results

An exact age makes a nice detail for personal projects. Here are a few ideas that pair well with other free tools on this site:

  • Birthday cards. Write “Happy 30th” or a name in flowing script with the cursive name generator, then add the number of days the person has been alive.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age?

Enter your date of birth in the age calculator and leave the second date on today. You will see your exact age in years, months and days, plus totals in months, weeks, days and hours.

Can I find my age on a specific date?

Yes. Change the “Age on this date” field to any past or future date. The calculator shows how old you were, or will be, on that exact day.

Why does my age in months or days look different on another site?

Calculators can count month-end dates differently. This tool uses the last day of a shorter month when your birth day does not exist in it, so January 31 to February 28 counts as one month.

How does the calculator handle a February 29 birthday?

When your birth date is February 29, a setting appears. Choose whether your birthday counts on February 28 or March 1 in years without a leap day.

What is chronological age in years and months?

It is your age since birth written as years;months, such as 8;4 for 8 years and 4 months. Many school and speech tests use it. Follow the test manual for how to round the leftover days.

Is my date of birth saved or sent anywhere?

No. The math runs in your browser with JavaScript. The dates you enter are not sent to our server, and this page does not store them.
